Nissan Scratch Shield Technology Help Them Design iPhone Case

One of the many things we admire about Nissan is that when they come up with good thing, they're not afraid to share it. Another: They wait to share it until they're confident they've perfected it. The latest innovation Nissan is sharing with consumers outside of the auto industry, is its new Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case, developed with the help of the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials, Inc.

How did Nissan ever come up with the idea to make an iPhone case? Well, after spending a good seven years working on Nissan Scratch Shield and using it on select vehicles (i.e., the Nissan Murano and Nissan 370Z) for the past four; they decided it could and should be enjoyed by more people on an everyday (and in some cases hourly) basis. And, what devise do people use most relentlessly, but their phones.

Of course, Nissan didn't decide to apply Nissan Scratch Shield to just any phone. They chose to develop a case exclusively for the iPhone. Like the application used on the Nissan Murano and Nissan 370Z, the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case will offer scratch resistance and scratch healing (yes, scratch healing). In addition, it will provide better grip than iPhone cases currently on the market.

If you're still caught up on the self-healing property of the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case, know you're not alone. Upon first learning about it a while back, we were too. It might not help make it sound any less freaky, but knowing how it works might help you to understand that its freakiness really is in users' favor. The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case itself is made from high-grade ABS plastic used widely throughout the automotive industry for its superior rigidity and robust durability. The magic happens via the outer polyotaxane coating, which thanks to its chemical structure reacts to a superficial blemishes by filling them in and morphing the case back to its original shape. This regeneration promises to keep phones looking like new until long after the next time you decide to upgrade.

The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case is in testing now. As for the next step...You can expect to see it go on sale later in 2012, bearing tests go according to plan.
